Common questions and tips from our work with Manhattan customers.
- What are the signs my truck needs brake work?
- Watch for squealing or grinding when you stop, a soft or low brake pedal, the truck pulling to one side, vibration through the pedal or steering wheel, or a brake warning light. A burning smell after a long downhill or a heavy tow is another sign. Any of these calls for an inspection soon, especially on a truck that carries heavy loads or pulls a trailer.
- Why do work truck brakes wear out faster?
- Brakes turn motion into heat, and a heavier truck needs more braking force to stop. Payload, trailers, stop-and-go routes and job-site driving all add heat and wear to pads, rotors and drums. Heat also breaks down brake fluid over time. Trucks that tow or haul heavy equipment should have their brakes inspected more often than a light passenger vehicle.
Tip
Do Not Skip Brake Fluid Service
Brake fluid absorbs moisture from the air over time. Moisture lowers the fluid's boiling point and can corrode lines and calipers from the inside. On a truck that tows or hauls, overheated fluid can lead to a soft pedal on a long stop. Check the owner's manual for the recommended fluid service interval, and have the fluid tested during brake inspections.
